Raising a Kitten

Protect your BFF from the things you can’t see

Welcoming a kitten into your family is an exciting time.
At Mascot Animal Hospital, we’re here to help your kitten get a healthy start and make sure you feel confident through those early months.

Examination

Every kitten should have a comprehensive nose-to-tail examination to make sure everything is

developing as it should. During the exam, our veterinarian will:

  • Check your kitten’s vital signs
  • Examine the ears, eyes, nose, mouth, teeth, and gums
  • Assess growth, weight, and overall development
  • Recommend vaccinations based on lifestyle and exposure risk
  • Answer any questions you have about care, feeding, or behaviour

Kitten Vaccines

Vaccinations are a key part of your kitten’s health plan.

They help protect against serious viral and bacterial infections during a time when the immune system is still developing.

Our veterinarians will recommend a vaccination schedule based on current Canadian guidelines and your kitten’s individual lifestyle.

6–8 Weeks

Core Vaccine

Testing

* Disclaimer: Timing may vary from kitten to kitten

FVRCP

This vaccine protects against three serious and highly contagious feline diseases:

  • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, which causes upper respiratory illness
  • Calicivirus, which can cause respiratory disease and oral ulcers
  • Panleukopenia, a severe disease affecting the immune and gastrointestinal systems

FeLV/FIV Testing

This blood test screens for feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus. Both affect the immune system and can impact long-term health. While these conditions are not curable, early identification helps guide care and management.

12 Weeks

Core Vaccine

Non-Core Vaccine

* Disclaimer: Timing may vary from kitten to kitten

FVRCP

This booster continues to strengthen immunity against upper respiratory infections and panleukopenia as your kitten grows.

FeLV#1

  • Helps protect cats against Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)
  • Recommended for kittens and cats with outdoor access or exposure to other cats
  • Especially important for kittens, as they are more susceptible to infection
  • Given as an initial series, followed by boosters when appropriate

16 Weeks

Core Vaccine

Non-Core Vaccine

Testing

FVRCP

Final kitten booster to complete the initial vaccine series.

Rabies

Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system. Vaccination is required by law in British Columbia and is essential for both pet and public safety.

FeLV/FIV Testing

Repeat testing may be recommended depending on exposure risk, outdoor access, or household dynamics.

Neutering and Spaying

Spaying or neutering your kitten helps prevent unwanted litters and offers important long-term health benefits.

Research shows that altered cats often live longer and have a lower risk of certain cancers and hormone-related conditions.

At Mascot Animal Hospital, the timing of spay or neuter surgery is discussed based on your kitten’s health, development, and lifestyle. We take time to explain options so you feel comfortable with the plan.
